“Sometimes in life, you find a special friend;
Someone who changes your life just by being part of it.
Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop.
Someone who makes you believe that there really is good is the world.
Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it.”
Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts. It is something so unique and so intimate to each individual relationship. You know what we’re taking about … there are memories, experiences and joys that you share with some friends, heartaches, tragedies and hurts that you share with others. Neither more significant than the other … simply different.
As cliché as it sounds, the saying “the older you get, the more you realise that it’s not as important to have a lot of friends, as it is to have true friends” has resinated and proved to be true in my life, as I’m sure it has in yours.
On often occasion, life has a way of unexpectantly piercing your reality and walking you through seasons that you never saw coming. It also has a way of bringing people into your world that walk you through such experiences. Sometimes people you don’t expect nor ever envisaged yourself allowing into your heart. These people become your compass, your voice of reason, your permission to be weak and your safe place.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be the loss of a loved one. It could be the change in life circumstance, the loss and grief of way life used to be, the fear of the unknown, the loss of your identity, job uncertainty, familial unrest or something completely different.
I have recently walked through a season a change, a season of uncertainty, a season of confusion – and the one thing that has remained constant (second only to my faith in God) is a friendship that I have shared.
A friendship where being ‘raw’ is the norm, where there are usually more tears than laughter and where words usually do not suffice – but also a friendship that has reminded me that; “it’s always darkest just before dawn” and that I “mustn’t confuse my current storm for my ultimate destination”.
How incredible that there are friendships in our world that weather the storm and survive to bask in the glorious sun and successes of life also.
Don’t ever underestimate the significance of friendship – the people who allow you to be true to yourself (weaknesses and all), the people who listen without judgement, the ones who cause you to smile even amongst the hurt, the ones who speak truth in love, who keep loving regardless of the walls around your heart, those who hear your silences louder than your laughter and who see your pain beyond the smiles. These are the friends who see you, know you and who love you anyway.
No matter where are you are in life, or what struggle you are enduring, know that you are loved and that there are those in your world who are championing you on to greater things.
How blessed we are to have someone(s) who changes our life by simply being a part of it and who makes us believe that there is not only good in the world but good in us too. Friendship is a gift from heaven and one to be cherished and protected. As you have been reading this, a name(s) has surely come to mind. Can we encourage you, keep those people close and thank them for their friendship and love.
If you have someone who has helped you endure a storm, who has restored your faith in yourself or who has caused you to once again see the good in this wild world, we would love to hear from you. As we’re sure, so would they.
